Bowel movements. Stool. Going to the bathroom. Poop. #2. Whatever you call it, it matters with Crohn’s disease.
This probably isn’t a surprise to you: there is no cure for Crohn’s disease. Because of this, all treatments, medications and surgeries, aim to help people attain remission of symptoms. For people with Crohn’s disease, symptom relief comes in the form of easier and healthier bowel movements.
Two routine stool tests for people with Crohn’s disease are used to examine fecal matter in search of active intestinal inflammation. These common tests are:
These laboratory tests are important parts of managing care, but you can also learn about your gastrointestinal health at home (or the office – or wherever you go to the bathroom!) by tracking and evaluating your bowel movements.
Measuring bowel movements with the Bristol Stool Scale
Named for the city in England, the Bristol Stool Scale is a method of classifying bowel movements. It has also been called the Meyers scale. The scale was developed following a survey of pooping habits conducted by Dr. Heaton and others in a 1992 study. The researchers found that the majority of people experienced abnormal bowel movements, particularly as it relates to shape and type of the stool.
For irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and Crohn’s disease in particular, the Bristol Stool Scale has become both a clinical communication tool and a diagnostic tool. Keeping a log helps monitor the quantity and quality of a person’s bowel movements. By comparing this to changes in medication or lifestyle, a person can monitor if the new strategies are improving their health!
